Violence of the Mind

Well, it’s March.  Time for something new: warmer temperatures, longer days, blooming flowers, budding leaves, colorful, fashionable clothes.  We look forward to all of that.

March is one of the two times of the year when I get most reflective about my relationship with God.  (The other is the New Year.)  I ask myself, "Am I on the right track?  Is there anything that I have forgotten?  Do I need to ask for additional help to accomplish what He has for me?"  (It’s okay to ask for help.  See the story of Moses and Jethro, Exodus 18:13-27.)

I look forward to that time for two reasons.  Someone said that it takes 90 days to make a habit, and the advent of spring is about 90 days since I set my New Year’s resolutions.  I can see what has become a habit and what is still sitting on the back burner waiting to be implemented.  I can pull out my scorecard and give myself all the checkmarks and happy faces my inner child could want for a job well done in some areas, and seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance for how to make things better in others.

The other reason is that I give myself a chance to evaluate whether what I wanted back in January still holds true in March.  If it does but I haven’t been working toward it, why not?

There are incredible blessings we enjoy as the spring season hits.  But there are other things sitting on the back burner that need our attention as well.  And I always say that we commit violence against ourselves when we don’t do the things we know God has called us to do—seek His face, obey Him, find out what He wants for our lives and move in that direction.

There are many kinds of violence.  I touched on these in the December 2008 MASS Love article under the Contributors tab.  This month, I am going to talk about a different kind of violence—violence of the mind—that destroys our walk with God, and offer some suggestions for how to overcome this particular diffculty.

Please join me under the Contributors and Members tabs for teaching and discussion of violence of the mind.
